Ever since I was a little girl, I felt a call on my life to speak and write. I began writing when I was a young teen sharing stories from my own life in the hope of encouraging others. Yet, as with so many other situations in my life, I began to listen to the lies whispered to my mind and to my heart…the lies that told me that I couldn’t write and shouldn’t write. So, not wanting to make a fool of myself, I stopped writing and I stopped public speaking.
Decades passed while my dream of writing smoldered. When finally one day I sensed God whispering in my heart: “You can either continue to believe those lies that were spoken to you, or you can believe the truth of the one who created you and gave you the gift and dream of being able to speak and write.”
“Yes, Lord” was all I could say, as I realized that I had been listening to lies for years. Lies that sought only to steal, kill, and destroy the very plan God had for my life.
That very same weekend I surrendered to God’s prompting to write a book about depression. But He made it clear that it was not to be a book written just from a doctor’s perspective, but it had to include my own personal story as well. “Hope Prevails: Insights From a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression” is written both from a doctor with over 25 years of experience in the medical and mental health fields, but also from the perspective of someone who has walked through the valley of depression and is now on the other side, offering you hope—the hope that prevails.
That same weekend that God renewed my desire to write, and He asked me to write this book, He gave me two words: Hope Prevails! At the time, I thought those two words were just for me, to encourage my heart to go on and believe in God’s greater plan. While that’s true, it’s His promise that despite our circumstances, despite our pain, because of Him, #HopePrevails!
If you or someone you love is struggling right now, I encourage you to hold on. This season won’t last forever. While it may feel like you are in the dark of night, keep seeking Him, because His joy comes in the morning! And as long as God is on His throne and you have breath, Hope Prevails!

There’s something about this book you may not know. The book was inspired by God.
Dr. Bengtson wrote it because God told her to write it. If you suffer from depression or know someone who does, this is the book you should read.
Better yet, trust God.
