“When are you going to write a book about anxiety?”
That was what so many readers asked after I wrote my first book, Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression and after my second book, the Hope Prevails Bible Study. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was up to the task of another such “heavy” topic after tackling the topic of depression, and I wasn’t sure if I could do it justice. But clearly, readers wanted a resource for dealing with worry, fear, and anxiety.
If truth be told, I wanted to write about chocolate or iced tea or beaches or all the lighthouses of Michigan.
In all seriousness, I knew that if I undertook the task of writing about a topic like anxiety, that I would have to go through the pruning process before I could write something that would help others, and I wasn’t sure I was ready. But in my heart of hearts, I wanted to write what would help my readers most.
Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises isn’t just written by a doctor with almost 30 years of clinical experience, it’s also written by someone who has had to wrestle with the giants of worry, fear, and anxiety, and learn how to battle using the tools God has given us.
I remember the days of driving to work with a boulder in the pit of my stomach, bricks weighing my shoulders down, and tears streaming down my cheeks.
Worry stole my joy. Anxiety stole my peace. Fear stole my present as it projected into my future.
Because I suffered, and I know how painful it is, I don’t want anyone else to suffer. Ultimately, that’s why I wrote Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises.
A Resource for Dealing with Worry, Fear, and Anxiety
In Breaking Anxiety’s Grip, I offer a biblically-based prescription for finding peace from worry or anxiety. I show readers how to recognize that anxiety originates from a spiritual influence and how to use the weapons God has already given them to fight back and reclaim their peace.
When living in this age of anxiety, worry can come from many factors: children, jobs, homes, health, and finances. News and social media also feed these fears. Even the fear of missing out leads to anxiety. In Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises, I help the reader see that the solution isn’t to try to rid our lives of the contributors to anxiety but to recognize where anxiety originates and then use the weapons of power, love, and a sound mind to fight back and live in God’s peace.
Through sharing my own journey of emerging from the battle with anxiety as well as the stories of others, I remind readers of their identity as a follower of Christ and of the peace he promises despite everything. I explain the spiritual battle that fosters worry and fear, and offer truth and practical application through Scripture to reclaim God’s peace.
This book provides the tools to cope with the crushing emotional burden of anxiety now and, more importantly, shows how to reclaim God’s peace as a way of life so that the grip of anxiety can be broken. True to my style and what readers have said they loved in Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression and the Hope Prevails Bible Study, at the end of each chapter I offer my prescription for the reader (Your Rx) with reflection and application questions, my prayer for the reader, and a recommended playlist of songs.
Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ChristianBooks.com, Books-A-Million, and other fine book retailers. And I would so appreciate your honest review!
