A week before Covid struck the world in 2020, my family moved across country from Dallas, Texas to South Carolina. We had prayed, sought the Lord’s will, and were confident in His leading. Yet, once Covid hit and social isolation became the norm, especially for us in a new city without relationships, loneliness reared its ugly head. The next four years were painful in every way. In a recent episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective podcast, my youngest son shared his experience and how he fought back through intentionally working to create a supportive community. In our increasingly disconnected world, the importance of intentionally pursuing relationships and cultivating community cannot be overstated. God created us to thrive in connection with Him and with others. Yet, many of us feel isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure how to build meaningful relationships. The good news is that it’s never too late to foster genuine connections that can transform our lives and the lives of those around us. As we move forward, we can explore what it means to begin building community God’s way and fostering meaningful relationships that strengthen our faith and bring hope to others.

Why Building Community God’s Way Matters

From the beginning, God emphasized the significance of relationships. In Genesis 2:18, He declared, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” We were designed to live in community—to laugh, cry, celebrate, and endure life’s challenges together.

Community offers support, accountability, and encouragement. When we face hardships, a strong support system can be the difference between despair and hope. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one…If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

Moreover, community deepens our relationship with God. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” When we gather with others who share our faith, we’re reminded of God’s presence and strengthened in our walk with Him.

The Challenges of Building Community

Despite its value, building community doesn’t always come easily. Our busy schedules, fear of vulnerability, or past hurts can hinder us from reaching out. However, pursuing relationships requires intentionality. Jesus modeled this beautifully by surrounding Himself with His disciples and investing deeply in their lives.

Building community isn’t about waiting for others to come to us; it’s about taking the first step. It’s about being brave enough to say, “I need people in my life, and I’m willing to put in the effort to make it happen.”

6 Strategies for Building and Maintaining Community

If you’re ready to cultivate deeper connections, here are some practical steps to get started:

1. Start Small. Building relationships doesn’t mean hosting a large gathering right away. Start with one person. Invite a friend for coffee or a walk. Small, intentional moments create the foundation for stronger bonds over time.
2. Be Vulnerable. Authenticity is the key to meaningful relationships. Share your struggles and joys with others, and be willing to listen when they do the same. Vulnerability fosters trust and deepens connections.
3. Join a Group. Look for opportunities to join a Bible study, volunteer organization, or hobby group. Shared interests or values create natural spaces for connection. If you can’t find a group, consider starting one yourself!
4. Practice Consistency. Strong relationships require regular investment. Make it a priority to check in with friends, make note of important dates, schedule regular meet-ups, or send encouraging messages. Consistency shows others that they matter to you.
5. Serve Others. Acts of service can build community in powerful ways. Whether it’s delivering a meal to someone in need or helping a neighbor with a project, serving others creates bonds rooted in love and compassion.
6. Create Safe Spaces. Fostering a sense of belonging means creating an environment where others feel accepted and valued. Be intentional about showing grace, kindness, and understanding in your interactions.

Maintaining Community in the Long Term

Once you’ve established relationships, maintaining them is equally important. Life’s demands can sometimes pull us away from meaningful connections, but prioritizing community ensures that those bonds remain strong.

  • Schedule Regular Gatherings: Whether it’s a weekly Bible study or a monthly dinner, regular meet-ups keep relationships thriving.
  • Communicate Openly: Stay in touch through phone calls, texts, or handwritten notes. Let people know you’re thinking of them.
  • Pray for Each Other: Prayer is a powerful way to stay connected. Lift up your friends and community members to the Lord regularly, and let them know you’re doing so.
  • Celebrate Together: Mark birthdays, achievements, and milestones on your calendar. Celebrating together strengthens your sense of unity.

The Reward of Community

The effort you invest in building and maintaining community will bless your life in ways you can’t imagine. Meaningful relationships provide joy, encouragement, and spiritual growth. They remind us that we’re not alone in our journey and reflect God’s love in tangible ways.

As you step out in faith to pursue connection, trust that God will guide your efforts. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” When you build community, you sharpen not only others but yourself, growing in wisdom, love, and grace.
