Have you ever gone through a situation so painful that you thought you might not recover?

Depression hurts in so many different ways, and the pain and emotional turmoil, to a very large degree, can feel like a broken heart. The scriptures attest to this in Proverbs, where we read, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit” (Proverbs 15:13, NIV).

The good news is that no matter what we go through, we can trust God to be faithful to His promises. And in the case of depression, or a broken heart, God promises to be near and to heal: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

Hi! I want to tell you what I love so much about “Hope Prevails.”

When I first heard about the book, I already had years of training about renewing our minds based on who we are in Christ. As soon as I got a chance to read “Hope Prevails,” I recognized those familiar truths right away.

Dr. Bengtson writes about those truths to those suffering from depression and she writes from the unique perspective of both the doctor who treats depression and one who has walked through that dark valley herself. She writes like a trusted friend who understands exactly what you’re going through and can take your hand and guide you out of that dark valley.

One of the things that she said about depression is that it feels like a broken heart. Sadly, in my life, I know all too well what a broken heart feels like and things like that certainly do lead us into depression’s dark valley.

Sometimes those things that broke our hearts happen more than once and that was the case in my life. I found that I had new wounds to heal and that was a point where the Lord brought “Hope Prevails” into my life and shown the light of His truths in new and refreshing ways.

Because Dr. Bengtson lives these things out in her own life, it didn’t feel like she was slapping Bible band-aids on me. It felt more like she had been following me around, taking notes, sharing similar experiences, and then we could walk forward together.

If you’re suffering from depression, I encourage you to read “Hope Prevails” and find in Dr. Bengtson’s guidance, comfort in those pages.
