Today is a good day for a good day! In a recent episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective podcast I shared why I started writing my daily “Good Day” social media posts, and why I consider each day a good day despite my circumstances or how I feel. On this, my birthday week, I feel incredibly grateful for each morning that I wake up and realize God has given me another day to enjoy Him and this beautiful journey we call life. I’m most grateful for the wisdom that comes with age, and for my Heavenly Father teaching me about finding my identity in Christ using truths from God’s Word.

I certainly haven’t arrived, but I am most grateful for all the Lord has taught me about myself and what He says about me. In a day and age when media is ever present in our face and in our ears and our mind, it’s so easy to believe what others say about us, but I have found that that rarely encourages my heart or makes me feel good about myself. Yet, when I recognize that I have believed the lies and refute them with the truth of God’s word, my thoughts, my attitudes, and my beliefs improve, because I am most grateful for God’s words and thoughts toward me.

It’s only in embracing truth that we can become all God destined for us to be. We must remember that we were created in God’s likeness, and that as Christ followers, we have the Holy Spirit residing within us to remind us of all truth. But the Holy Spirit can only remind us of the truth we have already taken the time to learn. There is no greater endeavor than committing His truth to memory. If we were to experience a time when we are forbidden from having physical Bibles or the Word in electronic form within our homes, the Word that we have hidden in our heart can never be taken from us.

As parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers and coaches, the best thing we can do is to teach our children what the Bible says about them so they can find their identity in Christ. But, that means we must know it too. I’d love to hear what additions you would make to the list below:

Find your identity in Christ using these 20 truths from God’s Word

Truth #1:
Me: I am a sinner.
God: I am forgiven and made righteous.
Proof: In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace (Ephesians 1:7). AND I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 1 John 2:12 AND God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Truth #2:
Me: I am guilty.
God: I am not condemned.
Proof: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here (2 Corinthians 5:17). AND Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

Truth #3:
Me: I am weak.
God: He makes me strong.
Proof: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV).

Truth #4:
Me: I can’t.
God: You can.
Proof: God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow (Psalm 18:32-34 NLT).

Truth #5:
Me: I am broken.
God: He makes me whole.
Proof: May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together – spirit, soul, and body – and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 MSG).

Truth #6:
Me: I am scarred.
God: I am healed.
Proof: But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).

Truth #7:
Me: I am poor.
God: God will provide for all my needs.
Proof: And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

Truth #8:
Me: I was abandoned.
God: I am chosen and adopted.
Proof: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9). AND God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure (Ephesians 1:5 NLT).

Truth #9:
Me: I have been rejected.
God: I am His and I am accepted in the beloved.
Proof: My beloved is mine and I am his (Song of Solomon 2:16a NIV). AND “…having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:5-6 NKJV).

Truth #10:
Me: I am alone.
God: He is always with me.
Proof: Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NLT).

Truth #11:
Me: I am a failure.
God: I am more than a conqueror and victorious in Christ Jesus.
Proof: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37). AND But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Truth #12:
Me: I am ugly.
God: You are beautiful.
Proof: Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight (1 Peter 3:3-4 NIV). AND He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV).

Truth #13:
Me: I am nothing special.
God: I am God’s workmanship and I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Proof: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10), AND I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well (Psalm 139:14 NIV).

Truth #14:
Me: I am not smart.
God: You have the mind of Christ.
Proof: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

Truth #15:
Me: I should’ve made more progress by now.
God: I am a work in progress.
Proof: Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6). AND Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11 NLT).

Truth #16:
Me: I am afraid.
God: You do not have to be afraid.
Proof: There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love (1 John 4:18 NIV). AND Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NLT).

Truth #17:
Me: I have to protect myself:
God: God is my protector.
Proof: I love you, Lord; you are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety (Psalm 18:1-2).

Truth #18:
Me: I am joy-immune.
God: Jesus came to give us joy and it’s available to all.
Proof: Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning (Psalm 30:5b). AND These things I have spoken to you so that My Joy may be in you and your joy may be made full (John 15:11).

Truth #19:
Me: I am unlovable.
God: God loves us with an unfailing and eternal love.
Proof: The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (Jeremiah 31:3 NIV). AND And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38 NLT).

Truth #20:
Me: I am worthless.
God: Jesus died because I am worth it.
Proof: For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 NLT).

 

The enemy is relentless in his attack. He delights in telling us who and what we aren’t, but our loving Father delights in telling us all about our identity in Christ. I’d love to hear what other contrasts between the enemy’s lies and God’s truth you’ve identified in the comments below.

Prayer for Finding Your Identity in Christ

May I pray for you?

Heavenly Father,
I thank you that You are the God of all truth. I thank you that you have sent your Holy Spirit to remind us of all truth. Forgive us when we give in and believe the lies of the enemy, which focuses on all we aren’t. Help each of us to turn to the truth in your Word to find our identity in Christ and know all that YOU say we are. Help us to believe that truth to the very depths of our soul. Help us to teach these truths to those you bring across our path. Help us to rejoice in the fact that you created us in your image, and that you consider each of us the apple of your eye. We love you Lord. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
