The holidays are often portrayed as a season of joy, family gatherings, and festive celebrations. For many, however, this time of year can stir up painful memories, unresolved grief, or deep feelings of loneliness. You’re not alone if the thought of twinkling lights and cheerful songs feels more like a weight than a comfort. The truth is, holidays have a way of magnifying both joy and sorrow. If you’re struggling with the emotional wounds of the past, take heart—there is hope for healing, even amid the pain.
Acknowledging the Pain
First, let’s acknowledge the reality: the holidays can be hard. They have a way of stirring up memories of what—or who—is missing. Perhaps this season brings a reminder of a loved one no longer here, a relationship that ended, or family gatherings fraught with tension and unmet expectations. Maybe you feel the ache of loneliness or the weight of past mistakes.
The beauty of being honest about our struggles is that it opens the door for healing. God does not shy away from our pain. In fact, the Bible reminds us in Psalm 34:18 that “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Whatever wounds you carry, God sees them. He sees you. And He is ready to meet you right where you are.
God’s Healing and Redemption
One of the most comforting truths about God is His ability to heal and redeem even the deepest hurts. Psalm 147:3 tells us, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Think about that for a moment. God, in His infinite power and compassion, wants to tenderly mend the areas of your heart that feel shattered.
Healing doesn’t always mean forgetting the pain or pretending it never happened. Instead, it means allowing God to transform those painful memories into a testimony of His grace. It means trusting that He can bring beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3) and that your pain is not wasted. Every tear you’ve cried has been seen by Him (Psalm 56:8), and He longs to walk with you through the healing process.

Practical Steps for Navigating Emotional Triggers
While God is the ultimate source of our healing, there are practical ways to navigate the emotional challenges that often arise during the holiday season. Here are some steps to help you find hope and peace:
- Give Yourself Permission to Feel. It’s okay to feel sadness, grief, or even anger. Suppressing your emotions often intensifies them, but bringing them to God invites His comfort and guidance. Journaling, praying, or talking with a trusted friend or counselor can help you process what you’re feeling.
- Set Realistic Expectations. The pressure to have a “perfect” holiday can be overwhelming. Let go of the idea that everything must look a certain way. Instead, focus on creating meaningful moments, even if they are simple. It’s okay to set boundaries or say no to traditions that feel too heavy this year.
- Create New Traditions. If old traditions bring more pain than joy, consider creating new ones that bring hope and healing. This might be as simple as lighting a candle in memory of a loved one, volunteering to help others, or spending time reflecting on God’s faithfulness in your life.
- Anchor Yourself in God’s Word. When emotional triggers arise, turn to Scripture for comfort and guidance. Meditate on verses like Jeremiah 29:11 (“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord…”) and Philippians 4:7 (“And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”). Allow His truth to speak louder than the lies of hopelessness.
- Reach Out for Support. You don’t have to face the holidays alone. Lean on your community—whether it’s family, friends, or your church family. Sometimes, simply sharing your struggles with someone who listens can be a profound source of comfort.
Cultivating Hope
Hope is the anchor that keeps us steady during life’s storms. As you navigate the holidays, remember that your hope isn’t dependent on circumstances, family, or friends. It’s found in Jesus, who came to bring light into the darkness. He is Immanuel, God with us.
When moments of grief or pain arise, pause and remind yourself of His promises. He has good plans for your life, and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Even if you can’t see it now, trust that He is bringing restoration and renewal in His perfect time.
As you walk through this holiday season, lean into the truth that God is not only the healer of broken hearts but also the giver of joy. Joy doesn’t mean the absence of sorrow; it means finding strength and peace in God’s presence, even amid sorrow. He is with you, and He will never leave you.
A Closing Word of Encouragement
Friend, if you’re struggling this holiday season, I want you to know that there is hope. God sees your pain, and He cares deeply for you. Bring your wounds to Him and allow Him to begin the healing work in your heart. Take one step at a time, trusting that He will guide you through the hard moments and lead you to a place of peace and joy.
You don’t have to face this season alone. God is with you, and His love is greater than any pain you’re carrying. Rest in His promises and know that brighter days are ahead.
With Great Compassion and Hope,
Dr. Michelle
