Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, and the idea of being thankful in the midst of challenges might seem impossible. Perhaps you’re walking through a season of loss, financial strain, or chronic illness, and gratitude feels like a distant goal, not a present reality. I understand those moments when the weight of circumstances makes it hard to find even a spark of thankfulness. If you’ve ever wondered how to be thankful when life is hard, know that God offers both grace and guidance to help you cultivate gratitude even in the hardest seasons.
But what if I told you that gratitude isn’t just a fleeting feeling? It’s a choice, a discipline, and a gift from God that has the power to transform your perspective, even in the darkest valleys.
We can learn to embrace thankfulness, even when we don’t feel like it, and in doing so, experience the blessings that gratitude brings to our hearts and minds.
5 Biblical Ways to Be Thankful When Life Is Hard
1. Recognize That Thankfulness Is a Command, Not a Suggestion
The Bible speaks about thankfulness as a discipline that transcends our emotions. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul reminds us to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (emphasis mine). Notice it doesn’t say, “give thanks when life is good” or “when you feel like it.” Instead, gratitude is an act of obedience and faith.
When we choose gratitude, even when it feels unnatural, we are aligning ourselves with God’s will. This obedience can lead to peace, because we shift our focus from our struggles to His sovereignty.
2. Shift Your Perspective to What You Can Be Grateful For
When life feels hard, it’s tempting to focus solely on what’s wrong. The key to thankfulness in these moments is to actively look for even the smallest blessings.
Start by asking yourself:
- Did I wake up today?
- Do I have access to food or shelter?
- Did someone offer a kind word or smile?
- Did I encounter something beautiful today?
God’s blessings are often found in the little things we overlook. As you begin to notice these small gifts, you’ll discover that gratitude grows like a seed watered daily.
3. Acknowledge Your Pain but Don’t Let It Define You
It’s important to remember that thankfulness doesn’t mean denying your pain. Jesus Himself acknowledged sorrow and wept with others (John 11:35). God invites us to bring our struggles to Him, fully and honestly.
Gratitude doesn’t erase the challenges you’re facing; instead, it helps reframe them. When we acknowledge God’s faithfulness in the past, we’re reminded of His promise to be with us in the present.
Consider keeping a “gratitude journal,” where you write down moments of God’s provision and answered prayers. On the hardest days, these reminders can reignite hope and gratitude.
4. Surround Yourself with People Who Encourage a Grateful Heart
Community plays a crucial role in fostering thankfulness. When we isolate ourselves, it’s easy to spiral into negativity or self-pity. Surround yourself with people who speak life and truth into your circumstances, reminding you of God’s goodness.
Consider joining a small group, Bible study, or even a prayer partner who can encourage you. When others share their testimonies of God’s faithfulness, it often inspires us to look for His hand in our own lives.
5. Trust in God’s Bigger Picture
One of the most challenging aspects of gratitude is trusting God when life doesn’t make sense. But scripture assures us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love Him” (Romans 8:28).
When we can’t see the full picture, we can trust that God is weaving our circumstances into something beautiful. Thankfulness in these moments is an act of faith, believing that His plan is greater than our current understanding.
5 Practical Steps to Cultivate Thankfulness
Building a habit of thankfulness takes intention. These five simple steps can help you nurture a thankful heart and show you how to be thankful when life is hard.
- Start your day with a thankful prayer: Before your feet hit the floor, thank God for a new day, regardless of how you feel.
- Write down three blessings daily: This simple practice can shift your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right.
- Meditate on scripture: Verses like Psalm 100:4, Philippians 4:6-7, and Colossians 3:15 can refocus your heart.
- Serve others: Gratitude often grows when we take the focus off ourselves and help those in need.
- Turn to worship: Playing worship music can lift your spirit and remind you of God’s presence.

Trusting God and Staying Thankful When Life Is Hard
Friend, I know how hard it can be to find gratitude when life feels heavy. But God’s Word reminds us that thankfulness isn’t dependent on our circumstances, it’s rooted in His unchanging goodness.
When we choose gratitude, we open the door for His peace to flood our hearts. It may start as a small, quiet whisper of thanks, but over time, it will grow into a steady rhythm of joy, even in the midst of hardship.
So today, choose to take one step closer to thankfulness. Not because life is perfect, but because our God is faithful.
You are not alone in this journey. We can trust Him together and embrace the gift of gratitude, even when it feels beyond our reach.
What’s one thing you can thank God for today, no matter how small? I’d love to hear from you in the comments.
Grateful for YOU,
Dr. Michelle

What about when you are grieving the sudden loss of a wayward daughter whist attending to the needs of another daughter who has terminal cancer. It is absolutely overwhelming!
Robyn, oh my goodness, that is a challenging situation for sure! I’m absolutely sure it is overwhelming, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with so much. When it comes to being thankful, I have to challenge myself to not necessarily be thankful for the hardships or challenges, but to express thanks that God is with me through it, and on the hardest days, He will sustain me even when I don’t understand how.
