3 Keys to Overcoming Defeat and Debunking Doubts
By Amy Elaine Martinez
Are you facing a challenge in your life today? Most likely, at some point in your day things won’t go as planned, an obstacle will appear out of nowhere, or the unexpected will catch you off-guard. All these things have the potential to leave us feeling defeated, doubting if we can conquer what lies ahead.
Fortunately, we can live a victorious lifestyle instead of doubting or doubling over in defeat. When the world makes us weary, running to God as our Champion and Defender is our safest bet. The psalmist tells us where to find our strength and joy.
My mission in life is to help others know that victory is possible. My aim is to help them avoid the pain I suffered by learning from my mistakes. Falling and failing are inevitable in this life. However, we don’t have to repeatedly fall prey to the ways of the world. Remarkably, when we do, God graciously provides a way out for us (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Instead of falling prey, let’s fall and pray.
Prayer remains our most powerful weapon in the fight of our lives. We can turn our vices into victories when we let God fight our battles. When life seems overwhelming or our foe too strong, victory is still our song. Because of Christ, we can overcome.
“Lord, you are my true strength, my Glory-song, my Champion, my Savior.”
(Psalm 118:14 TPT).
Thankfully, we can go to God to find the tools we need to battle it out better next time. I’ve found three keys to victory to help you be more confident as you face your biggest challenges.
3 KEYS TO VICTORY
- CHANGE your mindset to be MINDFUL. We have the mind of Christ, let’s use it. It’s as simple as thinking before you act or treating others as you would like to be treated. (see 1 Corinthians 2:16 and Matthew 7:12)
- CONNECT with God to be INTENTIONAL. We can set our priorities to seek God first before we run to a friend, Netflix, or Instagram for advice, approval, or a feel-good moment. Distraction is our enemy. Instead of all.the.other.things _________ (fill in the blank), let’s go to God first and let Him be the balm our soul needs. (see Matthew 6:33 and Psalm 144:2)
- CHOOSE Christ’s character over camouflaging (covering up who we are or were) or comparing (trying to be someone we’re not) because this is where our confidence gains its ground. When we let our identity in Christ rise-up, we represent Him well in this world. Identity, and Victory are our inheritance as children of God. (see Galatians 3:26-29 and 1 Corinthians 15:57)
Living a life of victory is possible when we truly believe we have everything we need living inside of us to overcome defeat and debunk our doubts. Because of the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, we have the capacity to change, connect, and choose differently.
When asked “What does living in victory actually look like?” My response is, “Not being who I used to be!” We can live in victory because we are given the opportunity to do better than the day before. Our past becomes a bridge to His power in us. Our mistakes become our message and mission. Yes, we’ve been given an invitation to come alive in Christ in the land of the living. Because, what’s in our past is dead and we have been made new in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). So, when doubt and defeat come calling, we can say, “Oh, I don’t live there anymore…that’s my old address!” Victory is our new address, our new territory.
When we change, connect, and choose differently the outcome is victory.
We’d love for you to share in the comments below other ways you overcome defeat and debunk doubts!

Wow, this blog is just as energetic, full of wisdom and insight as the podcast was. Thank you, Amy Elaine, for your testimony and your ministry to women who desperately need victory in so many areas of their life. They feel defeated and in our early marriage years, I felt that defeat, confusion, fear and pain of not measuring up, being afraid to make choices and seeking to be a wife and mom not knowing how to do that in a healthy way. My mom was depressed my whole childhood so I did not really know how to operate in a marriage relationship. I did learn and your message, these 3 keys, are so good and I can see my life back then and how this would have helped me so much. I did go to a Bible study that helped me see the wisdom in the Word of God about being a godly wife and mom. God blessed my efforts and we have been married for 53 years and we raised 2 children. I am sharing this on FB for other women to be encouraged and helped to overcome the defeats in life and live victorious. Thank you Dr. Michelle and Amy Elaine for sharing this with us.
Such an encouraging post. One of the big keys for me is not to invoke avoidance and distraction immediately. If I don’t let myself feel all the things, it just kicks the pain down the road.
This practical and effective way to combat defeat and doubt was a welcome balm to my heart. I’ve been very downcast because of the ongoing challenges in my marriage. I see now that I need to apply these keys to maintain an attitude of gratitude as I change my mindset to be use the mind of Christ. I now set my priorities each morning to seek God first to make my heart receptive to His voice. May I choose the way of Jesus in order to represent Him in this world and especially to my husband who isn’t a believer. Thank you for your insights into how to be victorious and overcoming the world.
Great tips—thanks so much for this encouragement! Stopping by from #tuneinthursday 🤗
