Life doesn’t always wait for us to catch our breath. When stress and anxiety creep in, balance can feel like an impossible goal. But peace is not out of reach. In part one of this series, we looked at the origin of the term “work-life balance,” the nature of stress and why it’s so harmful, the physical, mental, and emotional cost of prolonged stress, and the impact of stress on the brain. If you missed it, you can catch up here: [Why Stress and Anxiety Make Balance Feel Impossible].

Today, we’re shifting from understanding the problem to taking action. These eight practical, faith-based strategies will help you restore balance, reduce the weight of daily overwhelm, and embrace the peace God offers—even in the midst of chaos.

8 Strategies to Restore Balance, Reduce Overwhelm, and Embrace

1. Prioritize What Matters Most

One of the biggest sources of stress is trying to do too much. The reality is, you can’t do it all, and you certainly can’t do it all well. Consider adopting both a weekly and daily planning ritual across both your work and personal life whereby you establish the top 10 priorities for the week, then the top 3 priorities for each day. By narrowing your focus, you’ll accomplish more with less stress.

2. Manage Expectations of Others and Ourselves

When we consider that stress arises when situations exceed our coping resources and anxiety results from a fear of losing control, if we lower our expectations of others it leads to decreased stress and anxiety when things don’t measure up.

Also, we often expect more from ourselves than do others. If you were to list everything you expect of yourself in a day or week, would you reasonably expect the same from others?

3. Set Boundaries with Grace

We teach others how to treat us, and part of that is setting clear boundaries. This might mean saying “no” to commitments that stretch you too thin or asking for help without guilt. Protecting your time and energy is an act of stewardship, not selfishness.

This includes learning to say “no” or “not now” gracefully and asking for help without guilt. Furthermore, appropriate boundary setting includes prioritizing non-negotiable family time, reserving specific hours for work, and protecting time for self-care.

4. Consider Self-Care as Non-Negotiable

We’ve all heard the example of putting on our own oxygen mask first in case of emergency because we can’t help others if we are no longer healthy or available.

Redefine self-care as essential for your mental and physical health, including basics like adequate nutrition, exercise, scheduled rest breaks throughout the day, and consistent sleep-hygiene.

Self-care also includes self-compassion especially on challenging days. There are no perfect days, but how we talk to ourselves on both good and challenging days matters! Pay attention to your thoughts and assess if you would talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself?

5. Prioritize Rest

Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. The concept of rest is reinforced in scripture: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). That speaks to rest, as an encouragement that even amidst chaos, peace is available.

Friend, we cannot pour from an empty cup! Our brain requires periods of rest in order to continue pouring out. Even just 5 minutes of prayer or meditation every hour holds positive benefits.

Feeling weary and burdened? Matthew 11:28 reminds us that Jesus offers rest for our souls. Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Read more for 8 ways to restore balance, reduce overwhelm, and embrace peace.

6. Redefine Success

So often, we equate success with productivity and perfection. But true success isn’t about checking off every box on your to-do list; it’s about living with purpose, peace, and joy.

Perfection is inward-focused and unattainable, but excellence is outward-focused and rooted in God’s strength. As Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Challenge the success myth. Instead, let me encourage you to adopt a growth mindset: understanding that true success includes inner peace and joy, obeying God, walking in righteousness, and not just career milestones. Give pause to reflect on how you are growing in your spiritual walk and how you are growing and maturing each day.

Redefine “Success” in the Context of Balance: Never has anyone said at the end of their life that they wish they’d worked more. Consider envisioning a successful life that includes time for loved ones, mental wellness, spiritual growth, and personal fulfillment, while making obedience and intimacy with God a top priority.

7. Choose Peace Over Perfection

Work-life balance is about finding what is fulfilling rather than achieving some sense of perfection. When stress or feelings of overwhelm start to creep in, pause. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and exhale the anxiety you’ve been holding. Worry, fear, and anxiety are not your portion—God’s is. His peace is always available to you because peace is not a thing, it’s a person.

8. Surrender Control & Remain Anchored in Your Faith

If stress results from a situation exceeding our coping strategies, and anxiety results from the fear of being unable to control a situation or circumstance, we need to surrender control of the outcome, including the responses of others. I can more easily surrender control, when I give it to the one who controls all things.

Faith in God is my Anchor: Faith in God offers hope and perspective, making it possible to let go of what can’t be controlled. When stress overwhelmed me years ago and compromised my health, I learned three valuable lessons: First, I realized how very little control I have in this life and that God desires for me to surrender control to him. Second, I learned the reality that life will go on even when I’m not at 100%, and that God is not looking for perfection from me, but my desire to obey Him. I also realized I could do my very best, and I still had to surrender the ultimate outcome as beyond my control.
