Have you ever walked into a cluttered room and felt an immediate sense of stress or overwhelm? Piles of paper on the counter, an overflowing closet, or a chaotic schedule can weigh on us more than we realize. But what if I told you that decluttering isn’t just about creating a cleaner space? It’s about creating a soul that is free to experience more of God’s peace? As we step into a new year, there is no better time to simplify our space and soul, allowing God to fill every inch of our lives with His presence.

My husband and I have moved across country twice in the past five years. Each time, as I began packing up the house, I used that as an opportunity to declutter my space so that I didn’t take unnecessary things to the new location.

The utensil for which I was unsure of the function? Out.
The clothes that no longer fit? Out.
The scratched pot or pan that was likely leaching toxins into my food? Out.
Games my children outgrew? Out.

While I was great at reducing the physical clutter, I can’t say I was as disciplined about decluttering and simplifying my soul. I can tolerate a “little” clutter for a long while. But when that pile on my desk begins to mount, or the pile keeps growing on my kitchen counter I struggle internally because when my surrounding is chaotic, so is my heart. So decluttering and simplifying my space and soul are important.

Clearing Out the Clutter: A Biblical Perspective

Just as physical clutter can stifle our productivity and peace, spiritual clutter – such as worry, bitterness, or busyness – can hinder our ability to connect with God. Hebrews 12:1 reminds us, “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” To fully embrace what God has for us, we must first release the things that are weighing us down. Whether it’s a grudge we’ve held onto, an unhealthy habit, or simply too many distractions, decluttering is a spiritual act of surrender, making room for God’s best in our lives.

Simplifying Your Space and Soul: Practical Ways to Make Room for God

  1. Start with Prayer. Before you dive into organizing your home, take a moment to ask God to reveal areas in your life, both physical and spiritual, that need to be cleared out. Psalm 139:23-24 says, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Begin with an open heart, ready for God’s guidance.
  2. Declutter One Space at a Time. Just as we don’t clean our entire house in one day, we must approach heart decluttering step by step. Start small, perhaps with a junk drawer or your closet. As you remove unnecessary items, ask yourself: Does this bring me joy? Is it useful? Would I buy it again? Does it align with the life God is calling me to live? Would someone else appreciate it/use it more? The same questions apply to spiritual clutter. Let go of things (and thoughts) that no longer serve God’s purpose in your life.
  3. Let Go of Emotional Baggage. Unforgiveness, resentment, and past wounds can be just as burdensome as a cluttered home. Ephesians 4:31-32 encourages us, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” This year, choose to lay down burdens of the heart and walk in the freedom of grace and forgiveness. Furthermore, lay your guilt, shame, and regret at the feet of the cross through repentance, and know that God does not condemn you, that’s the voice of the enemy.
  4. Establish Healthy Rhythms. A cluttered life often stems from an overcommitted schedule. Do you ever find yourself thinking, “I’m too busy to pray…” then, respectfully, you are too busy. Consider your commitments and responsibilities. Are they aligned with God’s purpose for you? Matthew 11:28-30 reminds us that God’s burden is light, and He calls us to rest in Him. Simplify your schedule by prioritizing what truly matters: time with God, family, and purposeful living.
  5. Create a Space for God’s Presence. As you declutter your home, consider setting up a designated space for prayer and reflection. A simple corner with a Bible, journal, and worship music can serve as a reminder to pause and seek God throughout your day. Psalm 46:10 encourages us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” Let your home reflect a place of peace where His presence is welcomed and distractions are kept at bay.
  6. Practice Daily Renewal. Just as clutter tends to creep back in, our hearts need regular renewal. Spend time in God’s Word, worship, and prayer daily to keep your heart uncluttered. Romans 12:2 urges us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Renewal is a continual process, and by daily surrendering to God, we keep our souls open to His peace and direction.

A New Year, A New Heart

Decluttering and simplifying isn’t about perfection; it’s about intention. As we clear out the unnecessary, we create space for the essential: God’s presence, His peace, and His purpose. A home filled with order and a heart filled with Christ are powerful testimonies of a life centered on Him. This year, let’s commit to simplifying, surrendering, and embracing all that God has in store for us.
