Many people long for freedom but can still feel stuck. Everyday freedom in Christ does not mean we can do whatever we want or refuse responsibility for our thoughts, emotions and actions. The day-to-day cares of life, including habits and ingrained thought processes, can appear to fight the freedom we have in Christ. On a recent episode of Your Hope-Filled Perspective Podcast, Dr. Michelle and I discussed Finding True Freedom in Christ: What Independence Day Teaches Us About Spiritual Freedom. But this post examines what freedom in Christ actually looks like in everyday life.

Common Misunderstandings About Freedom
Freedom in Christ does not mean unlimited choice, emotional independence, or avoiding responsibility. This false freedom can lead to anxiety, distraction, and spiritual drift. For example, too many choices in an ice cream shop generally leaves me feeling slightly anxious that I missed a better option. Freedom in Christ does not mean we can choose to follow him one day and then follow our own ways the next. This leads to spiritual drift because we mix worldly beliefs with God’s ways, which leads us out of true freedom in Christ.
Hidden Habits that Keep Us Spiritually Stuck
When we decide to follow Jesus Christ, we don’t become instantly different because there can be habits which hold us back. The writer of Hebrews says, Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1). Busyness, digital distraction, approval-seeking, and self-reliance can be modern barriers that keep us spiritually stuck. Freedom in Christ means we get to develop spiritual habits and take steps toward personal discipleship by examining our lives for hidden habits.
What True Freedom in Christ Really Means
Jesus Christ sets us free not only from sin, but for a new way of living. We experience a transformation through the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This transformation involves both our inward and outer selves. Most people find their identity in their careers, their place in their family of origin, what other people say about them, or in some type of tragedy. Freedom in Christ means we surrender who we think we are and what we think about ourselves to who Christ says we are and what he thinks about us. Then, we begin living differently with our actions.
5 Practical Ways to Walk in Freedom Every Day
Living in everyday freedom in Christ begins with different decisions on how we spend our time and where we place our focus. The following are five practical steps to walk in Christ’s freedom every day.
- Prayer. Start a conversation with God and keep it going throughout the day.
- Bible Reading. Find an easy-to-follow Bible reading plan that is NOT a one-year plan. Consistency develops a love for God’s word.
- Scripture Meditation. Add a Bible verse to your phone’s home screen for one week at a time. Pause to think about it before you open an app.
- Accountability partner. Recruit a friend or family member to turn prayer, Bible reading, and scripture meditation into lifelong disciplines.
- Habit replacement. Identify one habit such as a negative thought pattern. Then, create a new thought. Catch the negative thought when it happens and replace it with the new thought.

Key Takeaways for What Freedom in Christ Looks Like in Everyday Life
Freedom in Christ does not always feel like ease, instant relief, getting our own way, or emotional certainty in all situations. It often looks like peace in surrender, courage to obey, clarity about identity, the strength to say no, and joy which is not dependent on circumstances.
This freedom is both a gift and daily process. Many of our struggles with living every day in the freedom Christ provides are rooted in subtle habits. Small daily rhythms can support lasting spiritual growth. True freedom leads to daily peace and a heart transformed by following God’s ways.
