If you have ever closed your phone feeling more drained, discouraged, or defeated than when you picked it up, you are not alone. As a neuropsychologist, I’ve seen firsthand the emotional weight that screens place on our minds. As a follower of Christ, I’ve also seen how the constant noise of social media can drown out the peace and presence God so desperately wants for us.

Over time, many people begin to notice that social media steals their joy, subtly replacing peace with comparison, distraction, and emotional exhaustion.

Today’s world invites us to be connected at all times, yet so many of us feel more disconnected than ever: disconnected from our purpose, disconnected from each other, and even disconnected from God. That is why I am so grateful for conversations on Your Hope-Filled Perspective podcast, like the one I recently had with Allie Marie Smith, author of Social Media Reset: A 30-Day Guided Journey to Unplug, Reconnect with God, and Reclaim Your Joy, where we talked about how to break free from digital overload. Allie brings wisdom, compassion, and lived experience to an issue most of us struggle with silently: how to maintain emotional and spiritual health in a digital world that never sleeps.

And the truth is, many of us don’t realize how much social media influences us until we intentionally step back.

When Social Media Steals Your Joy

Social media isn’t inherently bad. It can connect us to loved ones, encourage us through Scripture, and create supportive communities. But left unchecked, it also has the power to reshape our thought life and diminish our joy.

I’ve seen this pattern again and again with patients in my clinical practice:

A teen girl can’t sleep because she’s comparing herself to highlight reels online.
A young mom feels inadequate because every influencer seems to have cleaner houses and more obedient children.
A woman in midlife begins to feel invisible when her posts don’t get the attention others do.
A man in ministry begins to question his calling because his online engagement doesn’t match someone else’s.

The pressure is real. The emotional cost is real. And the spiritual impact is often deeper than we recognize.

We may not call it idolatry, but when our mood swings up or down based on likes, comments, or shares… when we turn to our phones for comfort before we turn to the Lord… when we measure our worth by digital applause rather than our identity in Christ… something inside us knows we’re being pulled away from what matters.

And that’s why God, in His kindness, often invites us to pause.

The Gift of a Social Media Reset

Allie’s book, Social Media Reset, isn’t just another “digital detox.” It’s a guided journey that helps us retrain our minds, re-evaluate our habits, and reconnect with the God who made us for something far richer than online validation.

A reset is not punishment.
A reset is not deprivation.
A reset is not legalism or guilt.

A reset is a gift.

It is God’s gentle whisper saying, “Come away with me. Let Me restore your soul.”

So many of us live like our minds are constantly buzzing—filled with notifications, alerts, comparison, distraction, and mental clutter. Our souls were not designed to intake that much information at once. Scripture tells us, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). But stillness is hard to find when our phones dominate every empty moment.

Sometimes we need to step back long enough to ask ourselves honest questions:

Is social media helping my spiritual growth, or hindering it?
Is it lifting my mental health, or draining it?
Is it encouraging community, or deepening isolation?
Is it drawing me closer to Christ, or distracting me from Him?

Questions like these are not meant to condemn us. They’re meant to free us.

What Happens When We Unplug

During our conversation, Allie shared powerful insights about what can shift when we take even a short break from social media. People often report:

  • More mental clarity
  • More emotional resilience
  • More presence with loved ones
  • Better sleep
  • Less comparison
  • More gratitude
  • A renewed ability to hear God’s voice

One thing that struck me was how she described the silence as “a kindness from God.” Without the noise of everyone else’s opinions, achievements, or criticism, we become more attuned to the gentle truth God speaks over us:

“You are mine.”
“You are loved.”
“You are chosen.”
“You are enough in Me.”
“You are called to live freely, not anxiously.”

So often, we think the problem is simply too much time on our phones. But the deeper issue is that our hearts are hungry for something social media will never be able to satisfy.

Only Christ can meet that need.

Replacing Scroll-Time with Soul-Time

If you sense that social media is affecting your mood, your peace, or your walk with God, you are not doomed to stay stuck. A healthier relationship is absolutely possible. Whether you take a full reset or simply begin to make small, intentional changes, here are a few practices you can begin today:

1. Start and end your day with God, not your phone.

What you consume first thing in the morning shapes your thoughts for the entire day. What you meditate on before bed influences your rest and your dreams. Even a 5-minute shift can change your emotional landscape.

2. Create device-free spaces or times.

For some, this may be the dinner table. For others, it’s the first hour of the morning, or the hour before bed. Choose one boundary and honor it.

3. Notice your emotional triggers.

If certain accounts or platforms leave you feeling anxious, insecure, angry, or inadequate, allow yourself to mute, unfollow, or take a break. Guarding your heart is not selfish—it’s biblical.

4. Replace scrolling with Scripture.

Anytime you feel the urge to pick up your phone, ask yourself what you hope to gain from it. Comfort? Numbing? Entertainment? Instead, turn to a verse that speaks to your heart. Philippians 4:8 is a beautiful place to start.

5. Ask God what He wants to reset in you.

He may invite you to rediscover rest.
He may invite you back into community.
He may invite you to embrace purpose without comparison.
He may invite you to hear His voice above all others.

And He will meet you there.

Endless scrolling can quietly crowd out peace, clarity, and connection with God. These five simple shifts help replace scroll time with soul time so your mind can slow down and your heart can reset. A Hope-Filled Perspective

Friend, God never intended for you to live overwhelmed, overstimulated, or emotionally exhausted by the pressure to keep up online. You were made for peace. You were made for connection with Him. You were made for joy that no algorithm can take away.

If social media has stolen your clarity, your contentment, or your confidence, there is hope. A reset is not only possible, but also powerful. As you begin to slow down, unplug, and lean in to God’s gentle voice, you will begin to feel your soul breathe again. And in that stillness, He will restore what the noise has tried to take.
