So often, we talk about spotting red flags in relationships, warning signs of toxic behaviors that can leave us drained, discouraged, and even traumatized. And while it’s important to be aware of what to avoid, it’s just as crucial, if not more, to recognize and intentionally surround ourselves with green flag people. Why green flag people matter is simple: these are the individuals who uplift, encourage, and strengthen us in ways that are not just beneficial but vital for our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. They are the key to healthier, happier relationships.

What Are Green Flag People?

Green flag people are those who reflect Christ’s love in how they treat others. They bring out the best in you, and when you’re with them, you feel safe, supported, and energized. These relationships are essential because they promote personal growth, emotional stability, and even improved physical health.

Science backs this up. Studies show that positive social connections can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and even improve longevity (Holt-Lunstad, 2010). When we surround ourselves with encouraging, life-giving people, our brains release oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” which fosters trust and emotional security.

The Bible affirms this principle

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

When we choose relationships that refine and build us up, we align ourselves with God’s design for community.

Signs of Green Flag People and Why They Matter

Here are qualities that set green flag people apart and show why they play such an important role in healthy relationships.

  1. They Celebrate When You Succeed. A green flag person rejoices when you succeed rather than feeling threatened or envious. They genuinely celebrate your victories as if they were their own. Paul encourages this in Romans 12:15: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Healthy relationships aren’t marked by competition but by mutual encouragement.
  2. They Remember the Little Things. Have you ever mentioned something in passing, only to have someone bring it up later in a thoughtful way? Green flag people pay attention. They make you feel seen and valued, reinforcing a core human need for connection.
  3. They Honor and Uphold Your Boundaries. Whether it’s emotional, physical, or mental boundaries, a green flag person honors them. Research on boundary-setting suggests that healthy relationships involve mutual respect and an understanding of personal space (Cloud & Townsend, 1992).
  4. You Feel Energized, Not Drained, After Seeing Them. Toxic relationships leave you feeling exhausted, but green flag relationships recharge you. This aligns with Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others.” Genuine friendships should be mutually uplifting.
  5. They Listen with an Open Heart and Mind. A green flag person listens to understand, not just to respond. They don’t react with defensiveness or dismiss your feelings. Active listening is a sign of emotional intelligence, which research shows strengthens relationships and mental health.
  6. They Let You Be Yourself. You never have to wear a mask or pretend to be someone you’re not. Green flag people accept and love you for who you are, flaws and all.
  7. They Provide a Safe Space for You to Grow. Whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually, a green flag person creates a safe space for you to share, process, and heal. In John 15:13, Jesus defines the highest form of love: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” A safe relationship is one where love is selfless and protective.
  8. You Don’t Have to Walk on Eggshells. If you find yourself constantly filtering your words to avoid conflict, that’s a red flag. A green flag person allows you to communicate openly without fear of backlash.
  9. They Support Your Goals and Growth. They want what’s best for you and encourage you to pursue God’s calling on your life. Hebrews 10:24 reminds us: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Green flag people help propel you forward rather than holding you back.
  10. They Offer Grace, Not Judgment. Nobody is perfect. Green flag people extend grace when you mess up, just as Christ does for us.

Why This Matters for Your Mental and Spiritual Health

Your relationships impact not just your emotional well-being but your brain chemistry and stress levels. Research confirms that positive relationships contribute to lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and a greater sense of resilience (Taylor, 2011).

From a biblical perspective, God designed us for community, not just any community, but one that reflects His love, grace, and truth. Paul instructs in 1 Corinthians 15:33: “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’”

If negative relationships can shape us in harmful ways, then the opposite is also true. Surrounding ourselves with green flag people can transform our lives for the better.

Take a moment to assess your closest relationships. Do they reflect the characteristics of green flag people? How can you cultivate more Christ-centered, uplifting connections in your life? We’d love to hear in the comments below.

If you recognize that some relationships in your life are depleting rather than strengthening you, it may be time to reevaluate your circle. Pray for wisdom and discernment in choosing life-giving relationships. Seek out friendships that align with God’s design: people who celebrate you, respect you, and encourage you to grow in faith.

If this message spoke to you, share it with a friend who might need the reminder that green flag people exist and they are worth investing in.
