What if emotional maturity isn’t about expressing everything you feel or suppressing everything you feel? There is a difference between feeling emotions and being ruled by them. Many people were never taught healthy emotional expression. Some learned to hide their emotions because vulnerability felt unsafe. Others learned to express every emotion immediately and intensely. Neither extreme leads to emotional maturity. So what does healthy emotional expression actually look like?

I have a friend who reminds me that she has “a garbage can without a bottom,” meaning that when I “need to vent” anything I say just passes through that garbage can without any judgment attached and is then forgotten. It’s wonderful to have a friend like that. But recently I’ve been convicted that “just venting” might not be so benign and often has more negative consequences than we realize. There is a hidden cost of venting.
